Altadena Equestrians To Hold Trail Awareness Ride January 26th

A trail ride sponsored by Altadena Equestrian Resources will be held on Saturday, January 26th at 9:00 a.m. at the Loma Alta Park Equestrian Area, to call attention to and rally support for their efforts to protect and reinstate the historic foothill trails of Altadena.

More than 200 riders and hikers have already accepted, with over 100 horses expected, from Malibu to Riverside. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.; fee for the event is $5.00 and includes lunch. The two-hour ride begins at 10:00a.m and will be a moderate level ride. There will be a group for faster horses and a slow walking group. Hikers and bikers are welcome to join in for camaraderie and lunch.

Altadena Equestrian Resources Chair Tracy Sullivan says, `We have been before the Altadena Town Council recently, to present our concerns and describe our goals, and they were most receptive and encouraging.'

Strongly supporting the equestrians' efforts is the Altadena Foothills Conservancy, whose Chair Dr. Nancy Steele, said, `One of our goals is to preserve and restore the Altadena Crest Trail to one continuous east-west trail, from Hahamongna to Eaton Canyon, and to increase trail linkages with other trails, through land acquisition, conservation easements, and cooperative work with other trails groups.' Dr. Steele added, `Altadena has such a rich history connected with its mountains. While thousands were enjoying the rail rides up to Mount Echo and the Alpine Tavern on Prof. Lowe's marvelous railway, others were exploring and enjoying themselves hiking on the trails running through the mountains. The Mount Lowe Railway is gone now, but the people are still with us.'
